VDTA 2009 - Las Vegas, NV

Monday, March 30th, 2009

M.D. Manufacturing boldly announced at the recent VDTA Show in Las Vegas that they refuse to participate in the current recession!  It’s one thing to make such a statement, it’s another to live it out.  By the looks of the constant crowd of dealers around the booth you had to figure something different was happening there.

Show participants have always anticipated that MD would be always presenting new ideas to the industry and this year proved consistent.  Of greatest interest was their new Vacuum Pipe Inspection Camera System.  This very cool suitcase kit contains a 60 foot fiber optic black & white camera system that can be inserted into the piping system to detect clogs, breaks, or any other abnormality in the pipes.  Its infrared lighting illuminates the pipe crystal-clear on the accompanying video screen reducing tons of hours of potential research work.  Simply remove an inlet and start the inspection.  It even contains a battery back-up system when power is not available on the job site.  MD plans an exciting launch of this product for a dealer cost of $499.

Additionally MD displayed a new PetVac kit that allow you to vacuum and groom dogs or cats with an awesome new tool but its fifteen foot hose contains a bleeder valve at the opposite end to keep from disturbing the animal near you.  And they also had a new inexpensive plastic separator bucket system.  Most homeowners rarely need to pick up water but what a convenience when it is needed.  Rather than retailing at over $150, this slick unit will be sold for less than $50.

MD also displayed a new hand-held electric beater brush that will fit right on the end of any electric hose.  No more loud air-driven tools; this one is great for staircases, couches or the interior of your car.  Speaking of small places, MD also displayed their new “MDU” unit for small central vacuum applications.  Measuring in at less that one cubic foot, this quiet, powerful central vacuum can fit inside cabinets, or will work ideal for RV and boat applications.  It’s new Allerex filtration system will also capture an amazing percentage of micro-particles.  MD hopes to introduce this to the market also in the next few months.

The Central Vacuum Track of seminars also showed no sign of the recession;  More than 50 dealers faithfully sat through hours of training including creative marketing techniques, installation helps, existing home installation, central vacuum technical theory and a comprehensive course on service.  Reaction of the participants indicated that this was a highlight of the entire show.

Its unfortunate if you missed the convention but let this be a catalyst to insure that you make a concerted effort to be a part of the show next year.  Overcoming a shifting economy can be far easier with a plan of action different than your historic direction.  We must constantly be making these adjustments or our business will simply be just like the other guy down the street.  So join MD in avoiding this so-called recession!

Central Vacuums Take Top-Honor at Peru Construction Trade Show

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

While the major markets of the world are experiencing tremendous turmoil; especially in the construction sector, many smaller nations are finding this as an excellent time to welcome new products and construction amenities.

Hernan Guembas, President of Aspiratek S.A.C of Miraflores, Peru recently found out how excited his new market was for central vacuums.  Hernan entered an M.D. Manufacturing Central Vacuum unit into Peru’s recent Trade Show contest for the Most Innovative Product of the Year.  “Peru’s interest in central vacuums is phenomenal,” said Hernan, “Architects, builders and homeowners all were thrilled with the concept of healthy cleaning.”

Peru’s annual EXCON 2008, the country’s largest construction trade show, is organized by CAPECO, the Peruvian Chamber for Construction in Peru and attracted more than 50,000 visitors this year.  Hernan, a newer dealer of M.D. Manufacturing products knew the product would sell itself in a market which is quickly adapting to North American appliances.

Product launches into new markets are not easy but Hernan and his staff intended to make as grand of an early impression on the Peruvian market as possible.  For his efforts, the show rewarded him with the “Best of the Show” Award, the show’s top honor!  Although the President of Peru was hoping to present the award, it was administered by Mr. Enrique Cornejo, Minister of Housing and Mr. Lelio Balarezo Young, President of the Peruvian Chamber of Construction.

Installations in the country are far different than North American construction because of the concrete block walls rather than wood or steel frame construction.  Hernan’s company, a long-time HVAC contractor, was well versed in the proper construction techniques and has easily adapted to the demands of the design.

Congratulations to Hernan Guembes and his staff at Thermotrol / Aspiratek  for introducing Central Vacuums to Peru and having the Most Innovative Construction Product of the Year in Peru in 2008!

Results from MD visit to CEDIA 2008

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

M.D. Manufacturing has been an active part of the Custom Electronic Design Installation Association for the past 12 years and was very pleased to participate in their 2008 Convention in Denver, Co Sept 4-7th, 2008.

As always, we find a tremendous amount of companies desiring to add central vacuums to their line card of products they install. Who would not enjoy an additional $1,000 profit for a few hours work? It was also an excellent opportunity to speak with many of you in regards to the latest products offered by MD and also to receive excellent feedback on our existing products and services. I must admit that is always a joy to hear so many compliments on our staff and the great job they do insuring that the dealers receive the right products for all their needs.

MD passed out T-shirts showing a TV screen that had a film of dust on it where someone had written with their finger, “It’s time for a Central Vacuum.” This subliminal message identified the fact that portable vacuums stir up a far greater amount of dust than a central vacuum and costly electronics would last longer if the home had a central vacuum.

Many other competitive brands of central vacuums appeared at this year’s show and here were some of the highlights: Nutone showed off the Flexible Technologies hose that has a 30 foot stretch-hose contained within a 15 foot vinyl hose. An electric switch on the end, combined with suction would pull it back t the 15 foot original length. Beam had a similar hose the previous year.

Dirt Devil (Vacuflo) showed off their new Vrroom hose that was a stretch hose contained within a retractable casing that was mounted in a cabinet. Upon lifting the wand, the hose activated and you could pull it about 25 feet out of the cabinet for easy cleaning. Installers would need to put a pipe-stub in the cupboard or under a work bench and the suggested retail cost of the Vrroom was $199 plus installation. They also were still showing the Hide-a-Hose system that sucks back into the wall.

Stopping by the Electrolux / Beam booth you could get a free shot of oxygen in your lungs and they also had a new air filter system that attached to the return air intake of your HVAC system. Honneywell (a Beam-made unit), Hayden, Vacu-Maid, and Linear Air Vac were all there but did not appear to have any new products.

As usual, the MD booth was full of energy and excitement. The MD staff were showing off our new S44 and M85 units as well as the new brochures and Training DVD’s. Our CentraMop and Manta continued to be big hits as well as our Quick-Click hose. It was great to have Steve Spriet a part of the team this year because of his 18 years of experience in the industry; of course Rebecca was a great help as well and Stan Mann has risen to the occasion to represent MD as the industry leader.

We greatly appreciate the hundreds who stopped by and especially our own dealers who spent time in our booth. We trust that your time was well spent!

Central Vac Scam Artist Caught in Canada

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Investigators in Newfoundland announced on May 6th that they had finally caught up with Michael Goldberg, who had been running from the law in at least 5 states. Goldberg had attended Home Shows in cities from Hawaii to Minnesota where he would take deposits for central vacuums; yet he never would deliver the goods. Goldberg also conned central vacuum installers for installations and would not pay them for their services. Most of all, unsuspecting consumers were bilked out of tens of thousands of dollars for a number of products.

The last we heard, he had headed to Canada, while authorities at the border were awaiting his re-entry to arrest him. The law caught up with him earlier than expected and he was arrested in Canada. Over the past three years, various dealers of ours have reported that Goldberg came to them claiming MD had recommended them for installation expertise. MD had spoken with Michael Goldberg at one point (he also had five other alias’) and saw through his scheme. He was officially refused business with MD. We understand that he did choose a number of other manufacturers to purchase from but would use MD’s extensive dealer locater to find dealers for his installs.

Thankfully he is now behind bars. If you have additional information on the case you might want to contact Police Sgt. Victor Quezada of Sandy Utah who has been pursuing Michael for some time.

MD walked away from the recent CEDIA Show with two exciting awards.

Monday, September 17th, 2007

First, our new AirForce Central Vacuum received the prestigious “Product of the Year” Award from Electronic House magazine. Never before has any central vacuum placed in this category so we feel this is a very high honor. Obviously they recognized the incredible advances MD has made in eliminating the low voltage wire and adding electronic features such as e-mail bag-full notification.

Custom Retail Magazine further presented MD with an “Excite Award” for a product that brings excitement to the Custom Home Electronics industry.

General Manager, Grant Olewiler was also a guest speaker on the nationally syndicated talk show “Into Tomorrow” with Dave Graveline. The show aired last Sunday the 14th at 2:00 – 5:00 EST. To find a member station visit : http://www.graveline.com/affiliate-radio-stations/ . Or to listen to past shows, visit: http://www.graveline.com/go/weekly-shows/

Obviously MD is making serious waves in the home electronics business and we want your company to be a part of this excitement. Feel free to use the accompanying logo as part of any advertising you do.

CEDIA here we come!

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Ten years ago MD Manufacturing was the first Central Vacuum to ever exhibit at CEDIA in the famed “New Orleans Show”. What a pre-cursor of a show that was with torrential rains back in 1998. MD still feels that that it is the only central vacuum that belongs in the show as they are still the only company offering a truly integrated central vacuum. All the others simply clean carpets! Custom Electronic Design Installation Association (CEDIA) has turned into a massive geek-fest of every electronic product imaginable for your home.

The show also contains tremendous training tracks to assist in both product knowledge and business professionalism. MD will proudly be displaying all their latest gadgetry Thursday, September 6th through Sunday September 9th at the Denver Convention Center. Special features this year will be the new AirForce unit that e-mails when the bag is full, The Quick-Click hose that provides unparalleled convenience for all central vacuum systems, CentraMop that greatly reduces hard-surface cleaning by mopping and vacuuming in one single action, and VacnSeal Food Preserver System that uses the great suction power of the central vacuum for vacuum-sealing foods in the kitchen.

Sorry but the show is only for those in the installation business and I can tell you that the MD booth is always swamped. We do also have a live interview scheduled with “Into the Future “ with Dave Graveline, a nationally syndicated radio show and any press agencies should also request our comprehensive press package.

As always, our booth will be buzzing. We’ll take time to fill you in on how the rest of the show goes.

CEDIA 2006 - an absolutely fantastic success!

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

As the first central vacuum manufacturer to exhibit in the Custom Electronic Design Installation Association eight years ago, M.D. Manufacturing has always held a special place in its heart for this show. Sure, there are alarm shows and builder shows, but CEDIA is truly the best of the best when it comes to companies that care about quality products.

I actually drove to the show and enjoyed a side tour through some of the most beautiful scenery in Utah and Colorado. It was hard not to simply stay a few days in Aspen soaking in the fall colors! With a beautiful convention center and friendly atmosphere, Denver, Colorado provided a great venue for the show. Even the restaurants didn’t seem overcrowded, and parking was feasible. OK, our hotel was sandwiched between the freeway and railroad tracks, but it still was restful.

Our staff did a fantastic job explaining the litany of new products introduced this year, including the new Stealth II with user-friendly features. The VacnSeal was also a great stimulator as almost all viewers quickly grasped the user benefits from such a simple item. But the thunder of the show was displaying a prototype of our new AirForce central vacuum that e-mails the homeowner when the bag is full. These Home integrators just ate up the concept as it logically incorporated itself into their product mix. How simple to make the central vacuum a core part of their product offering, rather than just an add-on item.

So our booth was full for most of the show hours and our voices went horse after the second day. That is a gauge of a successful trade show!  What made it even more fun was to see dealers bringing other fellow dealers to our booth to have a demonstration of our new products.  Obviously they grasped the value of our products and just had to spread the news!

Yes, there were a few other central vacuums at the show but no new pizzazz exuded from their portion of the show floor. Beam showed the new set of tools that had headlights to shine on the dirt and also dusting brushes with varying bristle softness. Linear showed their newer Nutone and AirVac units that are made of plastic. Vacu-Flo showed the Hide-a-Hose that is available to the entire market. Hayden, Aqua-Air and Honeywell had nothing new to show.

So the MD booth was sucking in new prospective dealers from all sides!  What does this mean to end-users of our product? …. Easier access to MD products across the country. What does this mean to MD Dealers? ….. More name recognition that you are selling the foremost leading central vacuum on the planet!

MD Manufacturing releases new products for CEDIA 2006 in Denver

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

MD Manufacturing is widely recognized as being on the cutting edge of technological advancements in the central vacuum industry. This year at CEDIA, MD is introducing 3 brand new outstanding products.

VacnSeal Central Vacuum Appliance
A simple touch of the finger releases the suction arm to quickly vacuum-seal goods in a re-sealable ZipLoc® Double Zipper Freezer Bag. VacnSeal is the low-cost food storage solution nicely located underneath the kitchen cupboard and is installed like any central vacuum inlet. Bring central vacuum suction right to a ZipLoc® bag and begin preserving food today.

Stealth II Central Vacuum Attachment
Discriminating buyers will not accept inferior quality, and no other central vacuum power brush boasts the long-term durability and success like the Stealth. Its on-board computer eliminates belt breakage and assures proper carpet height settings. And now the Stealth II, with quick foot release, hidden cord management, and Glide-Release handle, is easier to connect and remove, making it the best brush on the market.

MD AirForce Central Vacuum
Introducing the most advanced central vacuum system ever invented. MD’s AirForce incorporates central vacuum advantages with home automation. Central vacuums provide deep cleaning power, better indoor air quality, and quieter operation, but AirForce also utilizes UPB powerline technology to eliminate the low voltage wire and allow shut-off based on telephone, doorbell, or other alarm activations.

MD’s 3 new products, along with much more, will be displayed at booth #176 during the CEDIA show. Hurry to visit our booth at CEDIA in order to receive a demonstration of our new products, and to be given a free sample of the new VacnSeal. Free VacnSeal samples will be given out to the first 400 people who stop by to visit the MD team at booth #176.

The latest from the world of Central Vacuums

Monday, September 12th, 2005

I hope to use this forum to keep you updated on the latest breaking news from our industry. The few trade journals that cover our industry are quite weak and almost all the reporting is simply manufacturers bragging about color changes or repackaged products.

Here’s a few tidbits from CEDIA.
First, the Filtex brand name is back. The name began in the late 40’s I believe as a portable vacuum sold door-to-door. Originally based out of Los Angeles, they added central vacuums on in the late 50’s. They actually used to make a few parts for us in the early 60’s and we made a few parts for them also. They company was sold a few times to VSI, Nader Mfg, M&S, and Chamberlain. Chamberlain sold out their central vacuum division to Linear late last year and apparently everyone forgot about the name. Well Lindsay Manufacturing noticed the gap and wisely picked up the name. So we now have a re-invented central vacuum called “Filtex” that looks just like a Vacuumaid. It is blue and silver will likely be sold to the builder/installer market.

Beam had their new”Prism” RF (Radio Frequency) hose at the tradeshow. I believe it contained two-way communication verifying that the power unit was operating with a led light on the end of the hose. (Something MD has had for 4 years). They really weren’t showing off the hose at CEDIA and no one we spoke to said they demonstrated it. Also they had their Electrolux Power Brush at the show but we noticed that the neck was completely broken off of the mount. They state that this was only a sample piece and not a production item so it will ikely be strengthened before they introduce it. Maybe they can’t slam it on the ground like we do when we demonstrate our Stealth Brush?

Also Beam had a new Electrolux Solaire unit at the show. It was an aqua green color and rather small. We’ll be posting the stats of it on our website as soon as we can.

Nutone displayed their new style unit that is egg-shaped and plastic. It looks cool but we really doubt that it will improve their performance. Somebody has to teach their booth design crew to install vacuums. This is the second show in a row where they installed their tees completely backwards! No one coming to our booth even mentioned that they saw it.

Of course MD, as always had a ton of new things. Their 5.0 version of the AirForce was a big hit turning off when the phone or door bell rings, but this version now offers a fool-proof way to check all the communication before you leave the job site. Simple test procedures are now built into every device to determine background noise, signal strength, and if any devices are not on the same phase. A laptop computer can also be used to run a series of tests to determine fluxuations over time. All this, without having to run low voltage wires. They even demonstrated turning the unit and or the power brush on and off from any laptop that had the software installed! MD also has it’s new CentraMop attachment that essentially gives you a “swiffer” on the end of the central vacuum wand. It’s pretty cool. And then they introduced their new website with new graphics and a far-easier means of drilling down into the tons of info found there.

Hope this helps bring you up to speed. I’ll be telling you more as the weeks progress.

Another successful CEDIA Show !

Monday, September 12th, 2005

Well CEDIA 2005 is now ended and already we look forward to Cedia 2006 in Denver. Where else can you find a compilation of 15,000 high-end custom AV installers all in one location ready to lap up our latest technology?

The show ended yesterday in Indianapolis and thankfully we received the crate for our booth before 11:00 PM this year. We always judge the results of the show by the degree that my voice has been lost. This year you can hardly hear me talk so I guess it was a great show!

It is such a joy to see the faces of these professionals light up. Most of them have never heard of MD Manufacturing and they are currently purchasing through a supply house such as ADI, AVAD or Worthington. When they hear that they can receive our products at or below their current pricing level, including all our bells and whistles, they go crazy. They had no idea anyone could do what we are doing with central vacs! They stand outside our booth mildly interested in our products but soon realize that our products are so superior to their current brand and always end the conversation saying: “Now make sure you get back to me right away!”

Having additional support personnel has also been a great pleasure. In the early shows 20 years ago, it would just be Wayne and me. Then, when we lost Wayne, I would do the shows solo for years. Ten hours of standing and talking was gruesome! The last few years have been so much easier having Mike, Andrew, Grant Jr. and other support personnel. This year Rebecca joined us at the show and she was a real trooper. She even helped tear down the booth. At one point she was moving too slow and got shrink wrapped! You’ll have to ask her about it!

The real highlight of the show; though, is seeing all of our existing enthusiastic dealers. They always are anticipating our new products and certainly weren’t disappointed this year. The CEDIA dealers especially care so much about quality so we displayed the new 5.0 software including the UPSTART tool. Imagine doing full diagnostic tests on the vacuum at the jobsite with your laptop computer. It was so cool!

So dealers, make CEDIA 2006 in Denver next September a priority. You’ll be “wowed”. To all those who purchase our vacs, these shows only help to fuel the flame of creativity that MD Manufacturing can bring you!
